This authentic Kaua’i adventure interweaves a unique cultural experience that allows participants to interact and learn amongst the local community. Participants will experience Waipa’s Poi Day, which involves learning how to clean kalo (taro) and make poi that will be distributed to kupuna and ‘ohana throughout the island. “Waipa is a place where folks can connect with the ‘aina (that which feeds us-the land and resources), and learn about our local values and lifestyle through laulima (many hands working together).”

This adventure will begin with work; cleaning kalo while talking story with our kupuna (elders). We will then head out for a hike in the ahupua’a (land division from ocean to mountain) of Waipa where we will learn about a mo’olelo (history of the hike). The adventure will end with a locally sourced lunch including poi that will be enjoyed with the Waipa ‘ohana.

All of us share the kuleana (responsibility) and ability to be more sustainable, and Waipa is a place for culturally relevant practices, teaching, and sharing while we learn again how to live in balance with our ‘aina. Restoring health and vibrance in the ahupua‘a and in ourselves too.”
